Kevin McClure
John Brown Publishing, London, 1996, £9.99
Subtitled ‘Doomsday Cults, Hopeless Predictions, Visions and Warning Signs How the World Will End’, McClure gives us a guided tour through some of the wackier people out there on the religious and political fringes, currently and historically, written in his beguilingly simple style. This is not really in Lobster’s area but McClure has long been a supporter of Lobster – thanks for the plug, Kevin – and in one or two places his discussion of some of the loopier conspiracy theories on the US fringe is relevant to Lobster‘s agenda. Highly enjoyable and entertaining, anyway.
There is one conspicuous absentee here. The major British millennial cult is the New Labour group currently fronting the Labour Party. Tony Blair gives every indication to me of being about to drift away on a pillow of guff from his moorings among the rest of us.(1)

- Preparing this book for publication is presumably why the third issue of McClure’s occasional magazine Promises and Disappointments has been delayed for so long. It is now out, £2.00 ($5 overseas) from McClure at 23 Strawberrydale Avenue, Harrogate HG1 5EA.
