51. United States foreign policy [Lobster #46 (Winter 2003)]
... anything that was in it. 'But not many want to read it, ' he said. The interviewer asked him, 'Why? ' And Pike replied: 'Oh, they think it is better not to know. There are too many things that embarrass Americans in that report. You see, this country went through a bad shock with Watergate. But even then, all they were asked to believe was that their president had been a bad person. In this new situation they are asked much more; they are asked to believe that their country has been evil. And nobody wants to believe that. ' The word for that is, of course, 'denial'. ...

52. Jim Jones and the Conspiracists [Lobster #46 (Winter 2003)]
... make the writer a 'conspiracist'. Because conspiracies are quite real. They exist, and they sometimes have profound effects upon our lives. Diabolical plots by evil geniuses are as real as 9-11 and the Holocaust. So, too, are the bumbling cabals of politicians and intelligence operatives bent upon adventures such as Iran-Contra, Watergate and the Bay of Pigs. Would Doctor Moore hold that the Nuremberg Trials were an exercise in conspiracism? Of course not. Would she deny that Hamas, al-Qaeda, the CIA, Enron and the Mafia are, by their very nature, conspiratorial? I doubt it. Nevertheless, it is fair to say that there ...

Deep Throat Uncovered? At a conference held in Washington DC in May, Professor Bill Gaines of the University of Illinois announced that, after four years, he and his journalism students had concluded that Fred Fielding (former assistant to President Nixon) was 'Deep Throat' who provided information about the Watergate break-in. This site contains a great deal of material related to the investigation conducted by Gaines and his students over the past four years, including information about the documents they reviewed, various media responses to their findings, a brief synopsis about the Watergate scandal, and the clues that led the students to Fielding. < http ...

54. Lying about Iraq [Lobster #45 (Summer 2003)]
... CIA analysts .. .. .. would no longer have to pretend that victory was in sight. ' (42) Nixon-Kissinger In the early 1970s Henry Kissinger was trying to create a parallel intelligence system and state department under his control at the National Security Council to by-pass both State and the CIA. If the Watergate affair was, as some believe, an anti-Nixon conspiracy by the CIA, in my view this is a good candidate for the reason behind it; it was aimed at undermining Kissinger by undermining Nixon. One of the Watergate 'plumbers', former senior CIA officer James McCord, told the Senate Watergate Committee how in 1972: ...

Every President from Truman to Reagan either visited Vegas to raise campaign funds or was politically and financially indebted to the people who ran Vegas. Paul Laxalt, one of only two republican Senate gains in the year after Watergate, had been a long-time defender of casino interests in the state. He was the first to form a Citizens for Reagan Committee, later becoming one of Reagan's key advisors in the White House. He was too tained to run for the Presidency himself. In tracing this increasingly symbiotic relationship between politics and organised crime in the ...

... laboured this. Who would expect a chair of the JIC or an academic historian of the CIA published by the Yale University Press to tell us the truth about American foreign policy? It's not that the books are valueless: Jeffreys-Jones has an interesting chapter on the politics around the Church Committee inquiry into the CIA in the wake of Watergate; and Craddock gives the reader a nice guided tour through the Whitehall view of the Cold War and a number of other incidents which involved the UK, for example Rhodesia. It's just that having noticed that they are not telling the truth about some incidents, how much credence should we attach to the rest of their accounts? Notes ...

... military officer with years of experience liaising with the CIA for the Pentagon, Prouty wrote a full-bore assault on the Agency. It was a major piece of whistle-blowing as well as a remarkable event in American political life; and in the normal run of events, would have been a sensation. Unfortunately it appeared during the Watergate affair and got buried by it. A flavour of Prouty's life and writing can be found at his Web site http://www.prouty.org/ William Cooper, author Behold a Pale Horse, died on 6 November 2001 after a shoot-out with police officers. ... (c ) www.lobster-magazine.co.uk (Issue 41) Summer 2001 Last | Contents | Next Issue 41 Jim Hougan's Watergate theory tested in court Introduction In January something very unusual happened in America: one of the major items of American parapolitics got aired in court. In the years following the events which led to Nixon's resignation, there were many Watergate books, not least those written by the participants in the drama - Dean, Haldeman, Colson, Ehrlichman and Nixon himself. They all offered up variations on the themes established in 1974/5 . But in 1984 Jim Hougan produced one of the great pieces of research in post-war American ...

... during the Vietnam war. This source also spoke of 'programmed' soldiers being involved in drug-running. He even used the phrase 'human tape recorder', implying that this ability was created by the military rather than inborn. The parallels to Valentine's Ellsberg piece struck me as uncanny. There never was a solid explanation as to why the Watergate burglars went after his shrink's files. Or why Hunt claimed the Ellsberg file was never covertly photographed, when apparently it was. I suspect those photos went directly to the CIA, not to CREEP. I've long wanted to put MK-ULTRA research behind me. I really do not want to be thinking the way I'm thinking. ...
