... which had, in its first two months of existence alone "compiled computerised dossiers on nearly 14,000 Americans, including selected political officials and moderates". (43) The IEC was secretly terminated on June 11, 1973, or shortly after press accounts of Dean's highly-bowdlerised revelations concerning IEC which he was about to make to the Ervin Watergate Committee. Such evasive tactics do not mean very much in today's age of computerised intelligence. Revelations about Army surveillance of U.S. citizens before another of Senator Ervin's Committee in 1970 had led to the formal termination of that programme on June 9, 1970, which we now know was four days after White House planning had begun on the ...

... repression and fearful of open democracy in any country- particularly in the United States. Thus, I suspect that in time we shall see more and more clearly apparently disparate lobby actions in the United States- Madame Chennault for the KMT and Saigon, Kermit Roosevelt and Richard Allen for the Portuguese colonies, Nixon's extra-national suppliers of untraceable funds through Watergate, and now the Chile and South Korea lobbies- as one single interlocking lobby for repressive violence abroad. As in the case of China in the 1940s or Vietnam in 1963-4, increasing weakness abroad- such as we may well anticipate in Chile and South Korea- will be accompanied by intensified lobbying in Washington, not just by these ...

... We believe that to be a euphemism for the late George Wigg, another person who was, as they say, 'close to MI5'. (93) Pincher attributes the story and the tracking down of the birth certificates to a former campaign manager for Wilson, William Gaunt. (94). Pincher adds that at the time of Watergate (1973? 1974?) "Tory MPs were promoting the idea that Wilson faced a 'babygate', noting that "the Tory leadership had been given full information about the problems presented by the birth of two children to Marcia Williams" before the election in February 1974. (95) The story was being considered for publication by ...

96. Letters [Lobster #10 (Jan 1986)]
... reading No 8 I thought I'd share the following with you in re: Secret Agenda and, on another topic, Frank Terpil. Throat Secret Agenda is deliberately ambiguous on the subject of Deep Throat's identity. Basically, I conclude that if Throat was a prominent member of the Nixon Administration, well-known to the public at the time of the Watergate affair, then he can only have been General Alexander Haig. But there is no reason to assume that. Throat could just as easily have been a comparative unknown- in which case, he was almost certainly someone whom Post reporter Bob Woodward met during his 65-70 tour of duty in the Navy. As Secret Agenda relates, that ...

... , bar a very faint inference proffered: that it was Oswald in 1963. But Cowitz know it wasn't like that. They used to be among the senior staff at Ramparts magazine; and Ramparts has the distinction of being just about the only serious magazine on the American left which continued to take the assassination seriously all the way through to Watergate. Ramparts published Peter Dale Scott's Dallas, Watergate and Beyond, one of the seminal essays on the subject. Cowitz know that it wasn't Oswald and Sirhan. This knowledge shows itself in the way they can't bring themselves to just hold their noses and state 'Oswald and Sirhan did it'. A sentence or two- who would notice ...

... entire episode remains a total 'no-go' area. Below we reproduce two long articles, one directly related to Kincora and one which throws some light on the milieu in which the scandal took place. These articles are, literally, just the tip of an iceberg of colossal dimensions. When- if- all this comes out it will make Watergate look relatively insignificant. However, for the moment all we can offer is these two pieces, and it is appropriate that it is the Ramsay half of the Lobster who is trying to write this introduction, because I find the entire Kincora episode extremely difficult to get a grip on and suspect that almost everyone else reading this does, ...

As Steve Dorril said in Lobster 8, this is a major event. This essay is in two parts. In the first I make some critical remarks about Secret Agenda's central theses; In the second I speculate about other items on the 'secret agenda' of Watergate. Part 1 Hougan's first book about parapolitics, Spooks (London 1979), was very interesting but very irritating. A shower of wonderful fragments, little of it was sufficiently well documented to be of much use to other ...
