161. Friends of the British Secret State [Lobster #16 (Jun 1988)]
... Pincher retired from the Express group of newspapers, somebody had to take up his position as the spooks' number one outlet. That person appears to be one William Massie. His name has appeared on some interesting material recently: viz: 14th February 1988, front page story in the Sunday Express based on leak from MI5- complete with surveillance photograph- on alleged contact between the then Labour MP John Diamond and two Yugoslav women. The article contained the women's passport numbers and the flights they came into Vienna on. The point of this was obscure initially: why would MI5 be shadowing a solid right-wing Labour MP like Diamond, a major supporter of Gaitskell? A week later ...

... valuable, because books on MI5 are rare commodities, it gives a totally distorted picture of what MI5 is about. Reading West's account one has the impression that MI5 is primarily concerned with dealing with defectors and imaginary moles. Wright's Spycatcher topples that idea very easily. West fails to mention all those areas which made Spycatcher so interesting: the surveillance of political groups, of embassies, liaison with GCHQ, the use of computers, operations abroad, contacts with the CIA etc. The picture is less distorted when we look at MI6- there are more sources. Quite rightly, Cavendish suggests that Anthony Verrier's 'Through The Looking Glass' is the best. It is choc full of ...

Edgar Hoover ordered the FBI to carry out the illegal surveillance of newspaper labour activists during the 1940s. Also revealed is the fact that informants included journalists who wanted Communists removing from the leadership of the Newspaper Guild.(1) Only following orders Psychologist Stanley Milgram, famous for his research into obedience, may in fact have been funded by the CIA.(2) 'Since the agency regularly laundered MK-Ultra funds through other federal agencies to some 185 nongovernment researchers and has refused to release ...

... out in Northern Ireland. Formed to perform acts of sabotage and assassination behind enemy lines during during World War 2, the SAS evolved into a counter-insurgency regiment after the war. The 1969 Army Training manual stated that their tasks included 'the ambush and harassment of insurgents, the infiltration of sabotage, assassination and demolition parties into insurgent-held areas, border surveillance liaison with, and organisation of friendly guerrilla forces operating against the common enemy'. (3) Examples were found during the Mau-Mau rebellion in Kenya during the mid-fifties, when SAS officers commanded some of the infamous 'pseudo-gangs' that terrorised the civilian population;(4) in Borneo, where they used cross-border operations to attack and destroy ...

... information which has obscured one or two simple points which effectively wreck this central thesis. In the first place Hougan has no evidence, not a shred, that the call-girl ring was, in fact, a CIA operation. The best he can offer is a series of claims which (to him) make it probable. "That the surveillance of the Columbia Plaza (site of the call-girl ring- RR) and the DNC was an intelligence operation mounted by the CIA is demonstrated by a long chain of evidence. That chain includes McCord's secret relationship to Hunt, the clandestine relationship of both men to the Office of Security, the Office of Security's use of prostitutes in the ...

As Pulitzer-winning New Yorker columnist and author, Seymour Hersh has established: 'Sometime in this period, the American Intelligence community got what apparently was its first look, via the KH-11 [surveillance satellite], at the completed and operational [Israeli nuclear] missile launchers hidden in the side of a hill.... The launchers were left in the open, perhaps deliberately, making it much easier for American photo-interpreters to spot them.'(12) This took place under heavy US pressure on Israel to accept a ...
