... the exiles and the spooks were up to. This continues. Take the case of Anna Belen Montes, a Cuban who rose to be the Defense Intelligence Agency's top Cuban analyst, while working for Cuban intelligence from 1985 onwards. She actually wrote a 1998 Defence Department report which announced that Cuba posed no military threat beyond its borders. Montes spied for political beliefs not money – she was a Cuban patriot – which the US media had terrible trouble digesting. But she pulled off one of the most striking intelligence coups I have heard of. The case received little publicity, getting buried under 9-11.See the collection of articles at <www.martinoticias.com/ ...

... assassinations (the attempts to get Nasser or Lumumba spring to mind). Paget's reply to Fayed's assertion is: 'It is important to note in the Stevens (Northern Ireland) Report that the term "agents" is used to refer to informants or sources and not "agents" as it is sometimes colloquially understood to be, "MI6 spies". Thus the reference to "agents being involved in murder" was a reference to actions of informants rather than the authorities. ' Paget concludes with the cosmically irrelevant observation that: 'These Inquiries relate specifically to activity in Northern Ireland. There was no evidence linking the allegations in Northern Ireland to the events in Paris. Operation Paget ...

... , as Sanders takes us through the political, military and intelligence history of South Africa, through the fall of the apartheid regime and up to 2005. There are occasional familiar episodes – the South African involvement in Angola, for example; the Rhodesia story; and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the revelations which emerged from that about spying, chemical and biological weapons experiments, and the brutal counter-insurgency campaigns waged by South Africa's military. But huge chunks of this will be new to anyone who has not been reading the South African press for the last 30 years. To my knowledge no-one has ever tried to bring all this material together before. And ...
