31. Someone would have talked, reviewed [Lobster #53 (Summer 2007)]
... Floor that an oil man they met in Houston told them that half of Texas knew that LBJ had Kennedy killed. Is this plausible? I have no way of knowing. We know so little about Texas politics and organised crime in the period. For example, it is still not possible to say for certain how significant a figure Jack Ruby was in organised crime. There is little information on the relationship between the mob, law enforcement and local politicians in Texas. There are just accounts which suggest power in Texas was wielded with payoffs and murder the Billy Sol Estes case being the most conspicuous example. This is a big book, over 500 pages of text, and ...

32. Things Israeli [Lobster #5 (Aug 1984)]
... Meir exchange that it was "the last time for many, many years in which an American President distinguished for the government of Israel the difference between US and Israeli national interests." (p182) Thus we can add Israel to the long list of groups which benefited from Kennedy's death. And I am reminded of the fact that Jack Ruby, whose motives for shooting Lee Harvey Oswald have never been made intelligible, was Jewish; and the Israeli state has always been willing to use violence in pursuit of its interests. (Perhaps I should suggest this to Imam?) Now, if someone was to research Ruby's connections to things Jewish in America, rather than to things ...

... would show the 'synergetic performance'. But it won't. About this stuff I'm still not sure. But it doesn't matter. Whatever Scott's wider intentions, taken slowly, Deep Politics is also a collection of dense, fascinating bits and pieces from the Scott canon; Scott on JFK and Vietnam (politely devastating Noam Chomsky); Scott on Ruby, narcotics, Army Intelligence, the Great Southwest Corporation and so forth. If it's not the massive, synthesising masterpiece I was hoping for it's still a wonderful piece of work. Last| Contents| Next ...

... of JFK's death by preventing forward movement. Fair enough, but here, though, I must weigh in on the side of over-determination. Given the catalogue of insouciant lawbreaking detailed in this book,(12) the political volte face from cold war to detente, the accumulation of enemies at every turn, Hersh's overall conclusion that 'Oswald and Ruby acted alone' (p.451) is explicable only in terms of the near elemental fear that the subject evokes in the American journalistic psyche. If anything, the mountain of evidence on the administration's flaws and contradictions which Hersh has captured- and his stance of avowed scepticism- only serves the opposite conclusion. The taboo around the presidential office ...

... unsolved. Craig and Rogers say the couple's son, Charles, was responsible. They also say he was one of the hit-men on the Grassy Knoll (the other was Charles Harrelson), and that Oswald, though known to both of them in the planning, was set-up as a patsy. Charles Rogers also knew David Ferrie and Jack Ruby. The 'crime of the century' is thus solved by the end of the book but none of it can be believed. No evidence is produced to support the authors' arguments. This is mystery solving by diktat. However, on the upside, there is some good discussion of the Three Tramps and the photo section finally convinced ...

... evidence to make decent cases for both the Mob-did-it and the CIA-did-it hypotheses; and there is now quite a bit of evidence on the CIA-Mob relationship going back to WW2 and the original contacts with OSS. We might now reasonably expect a plausible hypothesis on the JFK assassination to include a role for both organisations. A crude Mob hit (with Ruby tidying-up the loose ends on the ground), followed by a sophisticated CIA-directed cover-up, perhaps? In Lobster 23 I hypothesized, semi-seriously, that the straw which finally triggered the CIA to remove JFK was his support for the rapprochement between the Christian Democrats and the Italian Socialist Party-- the so-called apertura a sinistra in Italy. Evidence ...

37. JFK: The two Oswalds [Lobster #37 (Summer 1999)]
... SID RICHARDSON, CLINT MURCHISON, and HAROLD LAFAYETTE HUNT [my capitals]- had sponsored the plot against President Kennedy. All three were noted sponsors of southern racist and "pro-fascist" organizations.' At last- the smoking gun! The names of the men behind the hit! H. L. Hunt hated JFK (and Jack Ruby visited his brother's offices on 21 November 1963); Clint Murchison Sr. hated JFK and was a financier of the Minutemen and the Klan; and Sid Richardson might have hated JFK, too.... if he hadn't died in 1959. ... immediately after the assassination, the obvious inference has to be that he was supposed to be unveiled (after his death) as a Castroite. Which indeed, is what certain people tried to do. But the plan went wrong (Murphy's law). Oswald survived long enough to get arrested, talk of exposing the conspiracy, and Jack Ruby had to step in at the last minute to do the necessary. More importantly for whoever organised the affair, the US government, initially the Justice Department (i.e. the FBI) had decided immediately that Oswald had to be a 'lone nut'. Less than 24 hours after the shooting Hoover told Johnson that the FBI judged Oswald ...
