... John Baker White (later the Director of the notorious Economic League) to run 'Section D' of the IIB in 1923, and Baker White, in turn, recruited Knight as his one of his sub-agents. When Makgill died in October 1926, the agency was reorganised under the control of Baker White - and then incorporated into MI5 in 1931. There is plenty of archival evidence to show that under both Makgill and Baker White the IIB was used to undertake work and recruit for Special Branch, MI5 and MI6, and that MI6, therefore, had no monopoly over the agency's services. Anyone working for the IIB undertook work, on a subcontractual basis, for ...

... 14 October 1994, Rob Evans had a piece 'Our Lads on LSD', exploring roughly the same ground as Armen Victorian's piece on LSD testing in Lobster 26 . The same river twice John Hope had an interesting piece in Intelligence and National Security Vol. 9 No. 4 (1994), called 'Surveillance or Collusion? Maxwell Knight, MI5 and the British Fascisti'. This bears a striking resemblance to the Knight sections of Hope's piece in Lobster 22 , 'Fascism, the Security Service and the Curious Careers of Maxwell Knight and James McGuirk Hughes'. In Lobster 22 the opening sentence of the introduction is, 'The idea that the Security Service, MI5, colluded with British ...

The agent, Geoff Dominy .. .. ' (emphasis added) Typical of Searchlight to make a startling allegation without offering any evidence. What is 'British intelligence'? MI5? SIS? And who was Geoff Dominy? Clean aprons A correspondent wrote to MI5 asking for its position on Freemasonry. MI5 replied that the Service 'could not investigate the activities of the Freemasons unless they posed a threat to national security. In fact, membership of the Freemasons would not in itself prevent or hinder anyone from working for ...

... a massive and impressive work, one which attempts an overview of the last fifty years of MI6's operational history. Perforce, the bulk of it is concerned with the Cold War, and then mainly in Europe. This isn't overly eurocentric on Dorril's part: his preface states that he intends to publish another volume on the roles of MI6 and MI5 with reference to counter-insurgency in the Third World. This will give more attention to South East Asia and Africa than was possible in the present volume. Fair enough. As the British Empire dissolved in the post-war period, MI6, the foreign intelligence service, often accompanied by the recently created CIA, moved into the ...

... many more unanswered questions have led most reviewers to reject the burglar thesis. Even one of the investigating officers, Det. Sgt Mayne, admits that this case 'doesn't follow the accepted pattern of burglaries'.(16) But if it was not a bungled theft, by an admittedly very special burglar, what was the intruder's motive? MI5, Zeus and nuclear protest Some writers believe that it was the determination of the Thatcher government to push through a highly ambitious nuclear power programme which set the context for this murder. We know from Cathy Massiter (17) that the MoD and Home Office were using MI5 to monitor anti-nuclear war protesters, and from Gareth Parry ...
