191. Power Beyond Reason (Book Review) [Lobster #47 (Summer 2004)]
... co.uk (Issue 47) Summer 2004 Last | Contents | Next Issue 47 Power Beyond Reason: The Mental Collapse of Lyndon Johnson D. Jablow Hershman New Jersey: Barricade, 2002, $27.95 Colin Challen MP I tend to the view, presented succinctly in Who Shot JFK?, (10) that whoever assassinated Kennedy did so with the objective of installing LBJ as President. The tantalising question that arises is: did LBJ know? This book does not answer that question, but it does address issues about LBJ's mental state which make it feasible that he could have gone along with such a plan. (11) Hershman traces LBJ's mental history from ...

But Flint, for example, in his recent biography of Rhodes, gives a good deal of room to an account of the size and possible influence of the Rhodes Scholar network.(10) He writes of "the excessive number of Rhodes Scholars in the Kennedy administration." (12) Apparently unaware of Quigley, Flint notes that "in each of the white settled Commonwealth countries, South Africa and the United States, a similar, if less influential elite had emerged...and since ...

193. Reading Italy [Lobster #6 (Nov 1984)]
... not a shred of evidence. (There isn't even any evidence that the Pope was murdered at all.) Yallop actually has written a book exploring the 'cui bono? ' question (a ) without establishing that there was a crime, and (b ) without noticing that, even if there were, as with the assassination of John Kennedy, there are so many plausible answers as to empty the question of its force. And like his immediate predecessors in this new Italian 'market', messers Cornwell, Gurwin, Henze and Ms Sterling, Yallop fails to make the connection between Italian domestic politics and Italy's membership of NATO. If the Italian military/intelligence are involved in ...

... came up empty handed. A Defence Intelligence staff report (Document No 37) obtained by the IRA in early 1979, was published in part in May of that year. It made little mention of INLA. Mrs Thatcher was apparently appalled by the disparity of reports she received on intelligence in Northern Ireland. (British Intelligence in Action, Kennedy Lindsay) "British intelligence officers met their contacts and talked .. . all were to report later that night to their controller that nothing was known." (Harry's Game) Intelligence appointees were confined to 'tasking' - delineating collection areas for different services - and arbitration in inter-service disputes, of which there were many. ...

196. DEA, Crime and the Press Today [Lobster #12 (Sep 1986)]
... Woodward and Bernstein of the Washington Post actually used a Hunt story given them by Robert Bennett, the Washington head of the CIA front and Howard Hughes PR firm where Hunt worked at the time, as part of their litany of 'White House horrors'; even though the 'horror' in question - an interview with one Clifton DeMotte about Edward Kennedy and Chappaquiddick - had been suggested to Hunt, not by the White House, but by Robert Bennett himself. (60) Senator Baker's Minority Report about this and other CIA aspects of Watergate was, in turn, grossly distorted by the Post. (61). This is hardly surprising; the Baker Report revealed a CIA report ...

... wouldn't they? But in 1967, before much was known about the Agency and its methods, that this would happen did not seem to occur to Garrison and his staff. DiEugenio presents Garrison's investigation in detail and I still cannot see that he had a case against Clay Shaw. He had some evidence that Shaw had a conversation about killing Kennedy (him and a thousand others) and - less certainly - some evidence that Shaw and Ferrie had advance knowledge of the events in Dallas. (Them and at least half a dozen others we know of.) There is nothing else. Yes, Shaw and Ferrie lied to Garrison and his investigators; but this means what? ...

... on the British Right, and who was deeply involved in the peace feelers of May and June 1940, suffers this fate.(1 ) This is not to deny that the book contains very useful sections which genuinely add to our knowledge of what happened in 1940-41. Costello is convincing on the pro-Nazi machinations of Joseph Kennedy, the US Ambassador in London. He provides the fullest English language account yet of the attempt made by Butler and Halifax in June to set up a peace deal with Hitler using the Swedes as intermediaries.
