81. On the Trail of the JFK Assassins [Lobster #57 (Summer 2009)]

A couple of weeks before the assassination of JFK, Nagell walked into a bank, fired two shots into the ceiling and waited for the police to come and arrest him. Years later he claimed he got himself jailed to be off the streets when JFK was killed. He claimed he had been an intelligence officer who had been working ...

Notably, former FBI agent Turner tells us: that the book may have resulted from contact between the Garrison inquiry ...

Douglass Maryknoll, New York: Orbis Books, 2008, h/b , $30.00 Reviewed by Michael Carlson I am writing this immediately after Barack Obama's victory in the US Presidential election, almost half a century after John Kennedy became the first, and thus far only, Roman Catholic to capture the office. The 1960 election is the first I remember clearly, and the issue of Kennedy's Catholicism, while ...

... .. well, since Seal was a teenage member of a Civil Air Patrol group and did some joint activities with another CAP group which included..........Lee Harvey Oswald. (9 ) And maybe Seal flew a plane out of Love Field airport at Dallas on the day of the assassination of JFK. But that's a big 'maybe'. How reliable is the story about Seal on 22 November 1963? Well, on the 22 November a light plane sat on the runway at another airport in Fort Worth and attracted the attention of an air traffic controller there. The plane took off and landed later at Love Field, Dallas. ...

... good indeed. There is a bone I would pick with her. The book is mostly about US foreign policy, and, like many American leftists, Klein perceives its to be a seamless whole from 1945 onwards. But it wasn't, was it? Douglass's account of JFK's foreign policy (reviewed above by Michael Carlson) shows again that JFK was not an identikit cold warrior, supporter of American corporate imperialism. This is strikingly clear not least in US policy towards Latin America. Klein simply omits JFK's Alliance for Progress. Yes, it achieved little in its short life but symbolically it was of huge significance; and LBJ's prompt dumping of the policy and the subsequent US support ...

89. Dr Mary's Monkey, reviewed [Lobster #55 (Summer 2008)]
... The Kennedy assassination literature has produced some oddities over the years but this takes the biscuit. A sense of this is conveyed by what must be one of the longest subtitles in publishing history: 'How the unsolved murder of a doctor, a secret laboratory in New Orleans and cancer-causing monkey viruses are linked to Lee Harvey Oswald, the JFK assass-ination and emerging global epidemics' Kennedy assassination initiates will glimpse a little bit of the story from that subtitle. Cancer and New Orleans? Wasn't David Ferrie keeping thousands of mice in his apartment? Yes, he was. And he was, apparently, doing cancer research on the mice. In his apartment when he died ...

I didn't think much of his JFK book, Crossfire; and his The Terror Conspiracy (which isn't included in his CV on the rear cover, for some reason) about 9-11 and its aftermath was a sorry collection of conspiracy theories and sloppy thinking. But this isn't bad, mostly reporting of official material and interviews. It is Marrs' misfortune to have ...
