11. Notes from the Borderland, no. 4 (Reviewed) [Lobster #42 (Winter 2001/2)]
... of much of the first three issues. In my case, sympathetic to NTB, I have said very little about it because much of what I had to say would have been critical. With no. 4 two things have happened: there are more people writing for it and writing on a wider field than before, with pieces on Hess, Bettaney, and the WRP, for example; and O'Hara's own writing seems to have become less convoluted wirh less guesswork to fill in the gaps in his knowledge. This is presumably because the centrepiece of this issue, 21 pages by O'Hara and David Pegg, on operations to discredit the anti-EU cause in this country by agents of ...

The file in question, an MI5 document, PROKV4/58, shows that de Courcy first came to the attention of the Security Service in 1934 (without explaining why) and was under intermittent observation up to the outbreak of war with Germany. Thereafter he was 'kept under close observation', particularly in view of his association with 'appeasers, Russophobes and Petainists'. He was ...

Foot Scott Newton's footnote at the end of his piece on Hess, in your number tries to keep alive Dr Hugh Thomas's tale that the pilot who reached Scotland could not have been Hess, because he bore no trace of the gunshot wound the real Hess had received in Roumania in 1971. This was disposed of in 1988, when Charles Gabel published in Paris his Conversations secrets avec Rudolf Hess, without knowledge of which no one should tackle the subject at all. Hess told Gabel that a later team of doctors had, repeat, ...

(7) Hess: another piece of the jigsaw An interesting document concerning the Hess affair surfaced last year in the Public Records Office, London. It is a statement by T. A. Robertson of MI5 following a meeting with Air Vice Marshall Medhurst, Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Intelligence) on 12 May 1941. Robertson wrote his report on ...

... after so many peace approaches he couldn't believe that they would really fight him over the status of Danzig. The evidence for this could be found in captured German documents, published in the postwar years as Documents on German Foreign Policy. But there were personal testimonies, too: in 1954 the German Press Attaché in London in 1939, Fritz Hesse, wrote that Chamberlain had offered Hitler a 25 year non-aggression pact during the late summer of 1939. So it might all be a surprise for Roberts- but it's old news, really. Notes Paul Kennedy, The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers (London, 1988), p.429. The personal log books of some of the 87 Czechoslovak fighter pilots who escaped the 1939 German occupation of their country to fly RAF planes in the Battle of Britain were hidden behind the Iron Curtain for over forty years. Two of the pilots who survived the war, Sgt Vaclav 'Felix' Bauman and Sgt Leopold 'Polda' Srom, have left personal log books recording a flight in ...

... ). If Quisling, Degrelle, Pavelic and other traitors ever kept similar lists prior to forming collaborationist governments they presumably looked like this. So the list is probably a solid guide to those who would have been prepared to consider serving a collaborationist government in Britain in 1940 or later. It is also more credible than the list carried by Hess when he landed in May 1941, and much bandied about since.(12) Also: if the Right Club really were nothing more than a bunch of cranks why are the Ramsay files still blocked at both the PRO and the US Dept of State?(13) Griffiths, despite his conclusions, produces evidence to point to ...
