191. Loose cuts and short ends [Lobster #31 (Jun 1996)]
... described how, when he became Director of Mind in 1973, an anonymous document was circulated to some of the charity's most eminent supporters alleging that Smythe was some kind of communist agent. I wrote to Mr Smythe who kindly supplied me with part of the document. The document looks like a pretty obvious bit of state (IRD?) disinformation, doctored with some clumsy spelling errors and typos to make it appear non-official: for example 'legitamate' for legitimate, 'discribed' for described and 'conscious objector' for conscientious objector. What struck me most forcibly re-reading the document is this on page 7. 'Smythe was also involved with the International Confederation for Disarmament and ...

... he regards as crucial in winning his world war! All this certainly calls into question the book's intellectual integrity, leaving it open to the allegation of being knowingly dishonest as well as wrong. Which leaves us with Trump's election campaign. When its history is written it will be interesting to see whether or not Flynn brought his counterinsurgency expertise of disinformation and dirty tricks to it. Certainly he joined in chants of 'Lock Her Up' at Trump rallies, reposted and retweeted anti-Semitic and Islamophobic posts, and in the week before the actual election, gave credence to the story about Hillary Clinton and child sex slaves. Given Trump's poisonous relations with US intelligence agencies, Flynn, ...

One to insist that the bulb was altered after it was unscrewed, three tramps to walk across the room an hour later, one to insist LBJ really screwed the bulb in, and one to accuse all the others of being disinformation specialists. 194. Are spies useless? (Book review) [Lobster #34 (Winter 1998)]
... book was published in the Sunday Times 24 August 1997. The episode also involved Prime Minister Harold Wilson acting as go-between - another example of Wislon trying to be a 'good boy' where the spooks were concerned. MI5 had it in for Mountbatten and I suspect it was they who relaunched the defunct International Times circa 1981 to run disinformation through it, including the Mountbatten-is-gay story. I have to write 'circa' because there is no date on these suspect editions. William Blum's The CIA: a forgotten history, Zed Books, 1986, illustrates this was well as any single volume can. There has been a U.S . rewrite/update ...

... the 'flaking away' of right-wing elements from the Tory Party into the NF, by making them believe that they could have some influence through Tory Action. Certainly the tone of the Round Robin suggested that. He wanted MPs to feel that the party was behind Thatcher. I believe that much of what GKY said and did was disinformation. He wanted to create the impression he led a large, powerful group in the Tory Party, which wasn't true. Until 'New Labour', the Tory Party dominated twentieth century British politics by never having any serious rivals on the right. Contrast the Liberal and Labour parties and at times, the SDP and Nationalists, who split ...

... sphere. 'We know this as the social consensus heuristic – if everyone else agrees, so should I. '5 This method was also developed through 'whisper' campaigns, where the hand of the party was intentionally kept invisible. 'He [Goebbels] organised a countrywide network through which Promi [the propaganda ministry] could spread information – or disinformation – that was considered unsuitable to be mentioned publicly, or when the government did not wish to appear as the originator. This network was, of course, separate from the party organisation that extended control over all citizens. Revelations coming from the secretary of a church group would be more readily believed, for example, than from a ...

... AFB during the Gulf war. One of these, a former Navy pilot, and senior team member, is alleged to have been posted to a US aircraft carrier to assume temporary duty as Commander Air Group during the same time-frame. For a variety of reasons, I now suspect that this latter information may have been planted as disinformation in order to discredit this story. The identity of the senior team member, employed by the CIA and Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), is known to me, as is his background, and somewhat adds to my concerns. As our investigation of this story continued, we learned of a possible reason for Black Dog. ...

It employed a wide range of authors "many evidently channelled into the Forum orbit by other CIA units like Encounter and the Asia Foundation which the Agency used extensively in its work with Asian journalists." Most of their material was legitimate, building up FWF's credibility for the occasions when serious disinformation was pushed out. (11) Through Whitney and Kern House the CIA financed a small library and research staff for FWF. In 1968 that became part of the "Current Affairs Research Services Centre" - Brian Crozier's idea - aimed at making greater use of FWF's existing intellectual resources. This assertion, and the associated fantasies about the role of Colin Jordan are so wide of the mark as to be verging on intentional disinformation. Webster, pouting on the sidelines, was perhaps unconsciously projecting his own concerns when he said of the NF in early 1986 that the 'development they are involved in is not ideological at all but psychological. They are feeling besieged, unloved and worn down by ardent hostility.... They want to be loved. ' ( ...
