... - had the humility to accept and be troubled by. Renton's presentation of Trotsky as the ultimate theorist on fascism is a fatuous hypothesis: he was merely less wrong than the Stalinists, but as equally uncomprehending of the basic ideological motivations of fascism as most other Marxists. It is sad that a self-proclaimed Marxist like Renton should, contra Marx, so resolutely refuse to allow empirical evidence to influence his theories, except as insubstantial and contradictory adornments. Take, for instance, his references to the British National Front. By the mid-1980s according to Renton, 'the organisation was in a state of utter collapse' (p .7 ). Might I suggest Renton ...

The authors haven't exposed much that is new, instead they have taken all the previous stories and strung them together to make a damning indictment of the CIA. All your favourite stories are in here, from Gary Webb's breakthrough piece chronicling the links between the CIA; the Contras and the crack cocaine explosion in Los Angeles; through the CIA's use of psychedelics, ex-Nazi scientists and mind control, into the murky worlds of Indo-China; and then, via a chapter on Afghanistan, back to the United States and the cocaine connections to Arkansas and ex-prez Clinton. The solutions they came up with ranged from getting 'private' organisations to do some of the fundraising and propagandising; bullying the media into compliance; running massive psy-ops campaigns against the American population to overcome 'the Vietnam syndrome'; getting proxies to do the killing for them; getting permission for dope dealers who contributed to the Contras to deal cocaine in America; and covertly selling arms to raise the money denied by Congress. As an after-thought attempts were made to elaborate a 'doctrine' for this activity which encompassed all the constraints. This 'doctrine' was called Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) and the author argues that in the mid-1980s LIC became ...
