81. Book reviews [Lobster #4 (Apr 1984)]
... Illuminati fantasies of the loony right on both sides of the Atlantic, Nesta Webster has a lot to answer for. Her books, it has to be said, are not only total junk, they are turgid in the extreme. On both occasions I tried to read one I gave up pretty quickly. Most of the right-wing's conspiracy theorists are short on documentation and logic, but some, notably Gary Allen, just about carry this sceptical reader along. Reading Nesta Webster, on the other hand, is a complete chore. Gilman's biographical sketch of Webster appears to be the first of its kind. There isn't much of it but anything's better than nothing. Cutler Cutler is the editor/producer of the Grassy Knoll Gazette, one of the JFK assassination journals. Over the years he has produced a great many books/pamphlets on the case. This is a 40 page pamphlet full of Cutler's beautiful drawings and maps which argues that 007 was not shot down by a Soviet interceptor, but was destroyed by an onboard explosion. "The Soviet Union was trapped into becoming a patsy." Cutler sees the event as analogous ...

83. Mary's Mosaic (Book review) (Summer 2012) [Lobster #63 (Summer 2012) (free)] [Free Article]
... Mary's Mosaic The CIA conspiracy to murder John F. Kennedy, Mary Pinchot Meyer and their vision for world peace Peter Janney New York: Skyhorse, 2012, $26.95, h/b M ary Pinchot Meyer is one of the footnotes to the Kennedy assassination. She married future CIA bigwig Cord Meyer in 1945 and their social circle in the 1950s included many of Washington's ruling elite. As far as it was then possible for a woman to be an insider, she was one. She was good-looking, talented and financially independent. After divorcing Meyer in 1958 she became a bit of a bohemian amongst the Wasps of Georgetown – a painter, a ...

' (17) It's a conspiracy .'Our findings call into question current questioning about the function of conspiracy theories. If [they] are a means to provide explanations for uncertain events, or are a response to powerlessness, then it is surprising that people are not prepared to accept that they have been influenced by them. Minkin describes in detail how this trio ran the what he calls 'an unprecedented period of "platform" dominance at Party conference';1 5 but noted that this alliance was defensive in nature and saw a communist conspiracy behind all criticism. The political beliefs of the leaders of trade unions in this period was mixed. Some were supporters of Moral Rearmament (MRA). At the 1947 MRA World Assembly at Caux-sur-Martreux in France, delegates from Britain included E.G . Gooch MP, President of the Agricultural Workers. An MRA ...

... , the major media, and the New Age anti-semites Matthew Kalman and John Murray Earlier this year, as editors/producers of the radical-green magazine Open Eye, we found ourself investigating and trying to expose in the major media far right involvement in the Green and New Age movements. This included links to anti-semitic conspiracy theorists, Holocaust revisionists, the British Israelite and Christian Identity Movements, the US militias and so on. David Icke, the magazine Nexus and the London-based magazine Rainbow Ark attracted particular attention. But we found ourselves undermined by smears and rumours circulated by the very people who should have been most supportive. The Independent on Sunday ...

... 20 years, have a look at the long article on Skull and Bones which appeared in the Washington Post in April.(9 ) What with John Kerry and George W. Bush (and Governor Howard Dean) acknowledged members of Skull and Bones, it is getting hard even for an establishment paper like the Post to completely dismiss the conspiracy buffs. In the pursuit of Skull and Bones, Millegan's collection of essays and reprints of articles is a major addition to the published information on the group. The interesting material is in the second half of the book, reproductions of many articles from magazines around the turn of the 19th/20th centuries on Skull and Bones and the ...

90. Letter from America [Lobster #28 (Dec 1994)]
... the impression that Clinton protected Seal's operations. Nonetheless, I have problems with Terry Reed, whose story has grown like Topsy over the years. When we first heard this narrative in the Summer 1991 issue of Covert Action, Bill Clinton was a footnote character; now he has become Oliver North's partner, and a principal player in a CIA conspiracy. Compromised also claims that George Bush's sons had a direct involvement with the Medellin cocaine cartel, and that the CIA engineered the Hasenfus crash as a means to push Bush into Reagan's chair prematurely. Interesting notions and worth following up. But one new story rings quite false: Reed insists that he held an impromptu meeting with then Governor ...
