... concluding remarks. 'Secrecy .. .. is something inherent in the prevailing political culture.... political power flows through complex webs of relationships which alter the intentions and consequences that the state's legal-rational precepts attempt to inscribe. The outputs that emerge are not always those envisaged by policy-makers. This is not necessarily a conspiracy agenda or intention behind the uses and abuses of political power. Nor are they the inevitable outcome of Britain's particular constitutional arrangements. Thus the secret state will not "wither away" with the wave of a constitutional magic wand. The flow of political power is messy both in theory and practice and the task of explaining and reforming the ...

Further information, e-mail at [email protected] Colemanballs Dr. John Coleman is a name with which those patrolling the outer fringes of conspiracy-land will be familiar, even if, like me, you haven't read any of his books. So it was with some interest that I received a copy of Dr Coleman's magazine, World in Review. WIR vol 6 no. 5 is mostly chunks from Coleman's books which, from these extracts, appear to be the standard ...

... of work, it lacks some crucial documentation which could and should have been added, and Stich still appears to be resisting the idea of letting someone else have a go at editing and designing the thing. So, read the review in Lobster 31 , basically. To which I would add this: Stich has collected together many of the conspiracy theories, bits of research and allegations on the U.S . political and intelligence fringe since the arrival Ronald Reagan. Some of these fragments are more convincing than others; all are interesting. A better starting place for the study of the darker side of recent U.S . political history does not exist in one volume. ...

... left-wing readership of Covert Action to ignore him and his work.(5 ) Contamination by the right is so powerful that had Duesberg, say, been published in The Spotlight, that would be enough for many on the US Left to refuse to read him - or simply discount his views. This has happened to the Chicago conspiracy researcher Sherman Skolnick. I have read little of Skolnick's work, and what I have read did not impress. But Skolnick writes for The Spotlight. Cue contamination of Skolnick. Here's part of an interview Skolnick did with Kenn Thomas for Steamshovel. I deeply resent Chip Berlet, Z Magazine, various books, that run stories that I ...

... reporters on the story. The Post refused to print a reasoned letter from Mercury News editor Jerry Ceppos defending the series, even after Ceppos provided a requested revision. Perhaps the low point of this campaign was a story by Tim Golden of the New York Times, which explained that African-Americans are more susceptible than their fellow citizens to conspiracy theories and paranoia. But it's not necessarily paranoid to note what crack has done to our cities, or that the U.S . prison population has tripled over the past 14 years, or that California now spends more on prisons than it does on colleges and universities. And as the Mercury News noted: in 1993, snorters ...

... outside government. I was also a personal eyewitness to the falsity of a story published in the Washington Post (and subsequently retracted) which exonerated the Contras from involvement in drug-trafficking.(2 ) My researches into U.S . government involvement with drug-traffickers date back to 1970 when I wrote a book, The War Conspiracy, about the origins of U.S . involvement in the Vietnam War. I returned to this topic yet again in 1986, when I noticed that certain Cuban exiles I had already written about, some of them indicted or convicted drug-traffickers, were involved in the Contra support movement in Costa Rica.(3 ) After ...

... Wilhem Reich and Robert Anton-Wilson, and you might find a copy of Oz or IT which had pieces about two of those three. (Anton-Wilson appeared a little later.) This is probably why I like it: that's the stuff I grew up on. But the UK underground press didn't have Steamshovel's huge input of conspiracy theories. Steamshovel also has the faults as well as the virtues of the UK underground press. Oz and IT and the rest were fascinating but hardly reliable sources, and Steamshovel isn't the place to look for information in the way that Peter Dale Scott or Covert Action Quarterly are.
