... , and he 'now covers both the January openings and the monthly New Lists. ' Steamshovel Press President Kennedy with the late Mary Meyer I lifted the picture from the front cover of Steamshovel Press Number Ten. It shows President Kennedy with the late Mary Meyer, in September 1963. Mary Pinchot Meyer was then separated from her husband, senior CIA officer Cord Meyer, one of the OSS members who became the first dominating clique within the Agency. (I'd never seen a picture of Mary Meyer before.) The picture illustrates the second part of a long essay entitled 'The High and the Mighty: JFK, MPM, LSD and the CIA', the first part of which ...

... some of their eyesight, and continues to do so every day in many countries as the bombs remain on the ground. Assassination attempts on the lives of some 40 foreign political leaders. Crude interference in dozens of foreign democratic elections. Gross manipulation of labour movements. Shameless manufacture of 'news', the disinformation effect of which is multiplied when CIA assets in other countries pick up the same stories. Providing handbooks, materials and encouragement for the practice of torture. Chemical or biological warfare or the testing of such weapons, and the use of powerful herbicides, all causing terrible effects to the people and environments of China, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Panama, Cuba, Iraq ...

... me to be both new and significant. Parmet describes a hitherto unknown private visit to Vietnam's Diem by a personal friend of Kennedy's, Torbert MacDonald. "MacDonald himself explained why Kennedy sent him. The President had begun to develop personal sources of information from FBI men who were bypassing J. Edgar Hoover and going directly to him. Some CIA people were following a similar route and avoiding the agency .. .. when he heard that Big Minh and his group were planning to assassinate Diem, he wanted to make a direct contact. ... often Rusbridger feels obliged to reassure us that we do. I wonder if he really means that: his correspondence with the British media suggests otherwise. Clearly we need something to keep an eye on putative 'revolutionaries' with access to Semtex -- but do we need the present organisations? Do we really need MI5, for example? The CIA was originally going to be an open, intelligence-gathering agency. Would American economic interests have been better or worse served since 1948 had the CIA not come to be dominated by the covert operators? Although topped and tailed with new material, this is otherwise unchanged since the hard-back edition in 1989. The further collapse of ...

... , surely, is not the view of someone who is interested solely in the conspiracy of individual agents and rejects what Berlet calls 'the sytemic view'. There need be no conflict between research into conspiracies and 'the systemic view'. What Berlet seems unwilling to acknowledge is that within a 'systemic view' of the United States (or the CIA, or the Congress-Presidency relationship, or whatever) there are going be conspiracies of individuals: and when the individuals are as powerful as, say, senior CIA personnel, the conspiracies are also going to be significant. The trouble is that since the demise of Ramparts magazine, the American left (progressives) has rarely been ...

... opposed to that of the ARRB expert, Roland Zavada. The arguments around the evidence are too technical for me to even begin to summarise here, and 167 Summer 2010 they have been debated hotly before Horne even got to them. What seems incontestable is Horne's finding that the National Photo Intelligence Center in Washington received the Zapruder film from a CIA lab at Kodak in Rochester, and that the anonymous 'Bill Smith' who delivered it said it had been 'developed' there, which would mean it was Zapruder's original film. Or, it occurred to me, perhaps some other original film created and altered while the 'other' Zapruder footage was being moved around Dallas. Or, it ...

... This is not Dennis Lehane the American crime writer of that name. This is Denis (one 'n') Lehane, the co-author with Martin Dillon of of the 1973 Penguin Special Political Murder in Northern Ireland. Lehane was a journalist and this book is his account of what befell him when he declined to be recruited by the CIA. Although mostly an account of how a life can turn to shit if the spooks start playing with it, this is of significance because of the names that Lehane names. Lehane was awarded a Harkness Fellowship to go and study in the USA and discovered that the Harkness scheme is a front for an intelligence recruitment operation. Bright young ...

... They have keen ears for rumour, but seem not to have caught the admissions of KGB officers who made their own contribution to Britain's industrial decline. They never discuss the possibility that this was 'the enemy within, rather than the so-called 'secret state'. Allegations of KGB intervention are countered by charges that the real villain was the CIA. There is no parallel here; KGB aimed to 'subvert the democratic system, where the CIA, even at its most heavy-handed, aimed to preserve it.
