332. Feedback [Lobster #45 (Summer 2003)]
... , I have read the article Spinning the European Union: pro-European propaganda campaigns in the British media' by Andy Mullen in your Winter 2002 issue. Whilst it contains a number of minor inaccuracies it includes one major misrepresentation, namely that the European Movement, of which I was director between 1969 and 1986, received funding from the CIA and that the accounting structure of the Movement was designed to hide this fact. When Mr. Mullen interviewed me for the purposes of his article he did not put to me any questions relating to the CIA. Had he done so I would have categorically denied that the Movement had received any funds from foreign sources and in particular not ...

... | Next Issue 45 Southeast Asia: A Testament George McT. Kahin London: RoutledgeCurzon, 2003, 17.95, p/b The late George Kahin was a pioneering US scholar of Southeast Asia in the post WW2 era. This memoir describes some of his travels in the 1945-70 period, when he behaved rather like a CIA officer (for which he was occasionally mistaken), talking to the rising movers and shakers in the region and returning to the United States with his knowledge, his role in various controversies and his understanding of them. Three overriding themes emerge. The first is the powerlessness of formal American diplomats in the region against the military and the ...

... it isn't the point. In practice that affinity' led them to deal with, sometimes be funded and sponsored by, the institutions of the American state. It wasn't democratic liberal America' which paid for the American tendency in Labour to spend the 1950s visiting America, getting published and building careers. It was the State Department and the CIA. This is completely missing from Pearce's account. And it has been omitted. Even if Pearce is unaware of the work of the Richard Fletcher (1 ) and his successors - and Lobster is one - the institutions of American political power are in Healey's own account of his life, The Time of My Life: the Ford Foundation ...

A new dimension to the story has been added by allegations made in a German book and TV documentary that Frank Olsen, the American army scientist who was thrown out of a hotel window in 1953, after being given LSD by the CIA, had been working on biological weapons. A work colleague and friend of Olsen's, Norman Cournoyer, told the German authors that the American Air Force had indeed tested biological weapons during the Korean War, that Frank Olson had learned about this, began to despair about what he was doing and that this was probably the reason for Olsen ...
