(c ) www.lobster-magazine.co.uk (Issue 26) December 1993 Last | Contents | Next Issue 26 Eclipse: the last days of the CIA Mark Perry William Morrow and Co, New York, 1992 I'm not even sure if this has actually been published in the U.K .: I'd never heard of it until this copy turned up in my local library with a UK price stuck over the dollar price, suggesting a few were imported. This should have been sub-titled 'The Politics of the CIA in the 1980s'. I've read this twice, the second time to check that my initial perception that this was a very ...

Crozier would deny that he worked for anybody: 'at all times I remained independent, executing only tasks that were in line with my own objectives. '( pp. xii, xiii) But on p. xii of the preface he tells us he 'worked with' the CIA, MI6 and IRD; on p. 20 he tells that briefings he had been getting from an MI6 officer secured for him the job as editor of the Economist's Foreign Report; on p. 51 he writes of a 'part-time consultancy for IRD'; and on p. 86 that IRD 'put an office at [his ...

... the British serious papers in 1984/85. At the time the Greek government of Papendreou was trying to reduce the size of its domestic spy apparatus and that seemed the likely proximate cause. I think I was probably wrong about that. In his Eclipse (reviewed in this issue) Mark Perry reveals (p . 43) that the CIA were angry with the Greek government because (a ) they had released from jail two people the U.S . thought were terrorists, and (b ) they had then expelled the CIA deputy chief of station for illegally searching the apartment of the girl friend of one of the suspected terrorists. Perry describes the fury of CIA chief ...

The obituarist in the Independent of 23 June 1993, commented that 'she stood by him loyaly, convinced that he was the victim of an international plot involving double agents and the CIA. ' Well, something like that. Mrs Nixon's death was announced only a week after Channel 4 TV's Dispatches series broadcast a Barbara Newman documentary, 'The Key to Watergate' (June 16), a light gloss on this book. When the programme finished I went to the back issues of Lobster to re-read the review ...

In the mid-1970s the Senate Intelligence Committee headed by Frank Church warned that 'if not properly controlled, ' the NSA's technology 'could be turned against the American people at a great cost to liberty. ' For thirty years the NSA obtained copies of most telex messages entering and leaving the U.S ., and the CIA illegally intercepted thousands of first-class letters as they left the country. If the high-tech NSA were ever turned against us, Church said, 'no American would have any privacy left.... There would be no place to hide. '( 1 ) One word -- privacy -- summed up the debate ...

... or political conspiracies, using 'she is interested in conspiracies' perjoratively has been a pretty neat trick. It has been possible because of the existence of really dumb conspiracy theories of the 'it's all the fault of the Xs' variety. Who needs these crazy conspiracy theories? The great federal law and order and intelligence conspiracies like the FBI, CIA and NSA need them to legitimize and empower the term 'conspiracy theorist'. OK, it's just a hypothesis, but is there any evidence that the U.S . government has funded the purveyors of crazy conspiracy theories? It obviously isn't difficult or expensive. At a minimum it would just involve spending a few hundred thousand dollars supporting ...

The Free Cuba Movement was an anti-Castro movement funded by the CIA. If we had no other evidence than this, that within 24 hours of the assassination Ruby knew who Oswald was and, moreover, knew that he was a member of the FPCC, alarm bells should have rung in the head of anyone investigating the assassination. Aside from the Oswald slaying there is little material of Ruby included in ...
