181. Power Beyond Reason (Book Review) [Lobster #47 (Summer 2004)]
... (c) www.lobster-magazine.co.uk (Issue 47) Summer 2004 Last| Contents| Next Issue 47 Power Beyond Reason: The Mental Collapse of Lyndon Johnson D. Jablow Hershman New Jersey: Barricade, 2002, $27.95 Colin Challen MP I tend to the view, presented succinctly in Who Shot JFK?, (10) that whoever assassinated Kennedy did so with the objective of installing LBJ as President. The tantalising question that arises is: did LBJ know? This book does not answer that question, but it does address issues about LBJ's mental state which make it feasible that he could have gone along with such a plan. (11) Hershman traces LBJ's mental history from ...

... their corporate supporters to smear Bill Clinton. There is much talk of truth and honesty. How curious then that Blumenthal tells a spectacular fib about his own career, stating on p. 206 that his first book was the The Permanent Campaign (1980). Actually it was the 1976 Government by Gunplay, a series of essays about the assassinations in the 1960s (JFK, RFK, MLK), of which he was co-editor with Harvey Yazijian.( [3]) Are assassinations too weird for you these days, Syd? When Clinton took office 'Who shot JFK?' was on his list of things to find out. The Associate Attorney General whatever that is ...

... foreword by Jim Hougan who describes it as 'one of the darkest and most provocative books that you are likely to read'. I'm a big fan of Hougan's but I didn't get this book. Not that it isn't an interesting read: it is. But you would have to be seriously incompetent to make uninteresting a subject list which includes assassination, mind control, the occult, extraterrestrials, channelling etc. My problems are with the author's belief in the Jungian notion of synchronicity, in his words: 'another mechanism in the universe that binds together events seemingly unrelated'. I have never found this convincing but the author uses it to linkup all manner of what appear to be ...

184. Out of the blue and into the black [Lobster #51 (Summer 2006)]
... ) Like Dispatches, Jonty Brown links the 'inner force' to the execution of Pat Finucane, a lawyer and IRA sympathiser who exclusively defended Republicans, after Finucane secured the acquittal of an IRA murderer who killed two British soldiers at a funeral. Unlike the Dispatches programme, which was taken in by Billy Wright's fantasies that he was a key assassin of Republicans (rather than a squalid sectarian murderer on his own turf), Jonty Brown claims that, using the same methods he used to entrap Adair, as early as 1991 he had secured on tape, a confession by Ken Barrett that he killed Finucane. (7) That Barrett killed Finucane has been common knowledge only since ...

185. Coach into pumpkin: some problems with Paget [Lobster #54 (Winter 2007/8)]
... truth. But it has not told the whole truth. Indeed, there are parts of Paget that leave one reeling. Possibly the classic illustration of Paget's ability to talk around its subject comes on p. 821, which deals with Fayed's claim that: 'An assertion by the security services that they have no involvement in illegal activities such as assassinations is not credible [as] confirmed by the report of an inquiry carried out by Sir John Stevens...' You or I might take this as a claim that Britain's security and intelligence institutions have been involved in assassinations (the attempts to get Nasser or Lumumba spring to mind). Paget's reply to Fayed's assertion is: ...

... between black terrorists and various repressive agencies linked to NATO and the US, the very 'imperialist' forces that neo-fascist ultras claim to oppose. (49) Evidence of Right-Wing Manipulation. To illustrate this widespread rightist strategy of disruption and intoxication (50), I will focus on two well documented cases. The first involves the far-flung infiltration and assassination operations launched by former Organisation de l'Armee Secrete (OAS) terrorists under the cover of a Lisbon-based press agency called Aginter Press (AP). The second involves a series of violent provocations initated by members of the two most active neo-fascist organizations in Italy, Ordine Nuovo (ON) and Avanguardia Nazionale (AN). As we shall ...

... loyalist paramilitaries' (emphasis added). Not so: it was clear evidence to anyone. Taylor describes how, using state intelligence, the UDA's 'targeting' of the Nationalist community improved: fewer Catholics were murdered at random, more IRA members. Another way of describing these events would be this: the British Army was running the UDA's assassins against the IRA- and successfully, too. In effect, in the late 1980s the British state decided that while they could not kill the IRA openly (the late Alan Clark MP's solution: let the SAS loose), they could get the Prods to do it for them. A case can be made that part of the ...

... Third Secret: the CIA, Solidarity and the KGB's plot to kill the Pope Nigel West HarperCollins, London, 2000, £19.99 Let's dispose of the 'Third Secret' nonsense. West claims that Pope John- the Polish Pope- was told the 'third secret' of the Fatima revelations; and that this 'third secret' spoke of his assassination and suggested an anti-communist crusade. West reproduces the text of this on p.5- it was first released onto the Vatican's Web site!- and there is nothing in there which refers to the Pope, or his assassination, or communism. That may well be the case, but a closer examination suggests that Kincora is the link to a murky world of black propaganda, blackmail and assassination. A second report on the affair has been prepared by Sir George Terry who retired as Chief Constable of Sussex this year. ... the problems with the SCAD concept, which I discuss below. In this book deHaven-Smith does two main things. He traces the current use of the expression 'conspiracy theorist' back to the notorious 1967 memo issued by the CIA to all its agents and assets, with advice on how to respond to critics of the Warren Commission's verdict on the assassination of JFK: namely that those criticising Warren's conclusion should be described as 'conspiracy theorists'. The author notes that this turned out to be 'one of the most successful propaganda initiatives of all time'; the 'conspiracy- theory label has become a powerful smear that, in the name of reason, civility, and democracy, pre-empts public ...
